A player regarded widely as the best ever – certainly of the 21st century – Messi will play in his fifth (and probably final) World Cup at 35.
“The only thing I wanted to win was the World Cup,” he said after receiving the Golden Ball award for the best player of the tournament.
Messi took time to adjust to the added physicality of Ligue 1, but this season has been playing well, and working on his strength looks to have added a dimension.
Messi had caused alarm over the weekend by failing to show up for a scheduled team training open to the media. Messi responds to this.
“I feel very good physically, I think I’m in a great moment, both personally and physically, and I don’t have any problems,” Messi said, “I heard that they said I trained differently. It was because I had a knock, but there is nothing strange [happening]. It was just a precaution”.
“I took care of myself and worked as I have done all my career, knowing that this is a special moment, as this is probably my last World Cup, my last chance to achieve this great dream that I have, that we all have.”
