As the group stage begins to wrap up, the matchups in the round of 16 are beginning to get set.
- The 32 teams will be divided into eight groups in the first stage – Groups A to H
- In each group, each team plays against each other once in a single round-robin format
- The top two teams in each group qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup round of 16

So far, 14 teams, including France, Brazil, Portugal, and Argentina, have made the knockouts in Qatar. As can be seen above, France became the first defending champions (since Brazil in 2006) to avoid elimination in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup. Italy in 2010, Spain in 2014, and Germany in 2018 were all eliminated in the group stage.
